Acrylic is a powder-and-liquid mix that air-cures, and tends to be stronger and more affordable. Gel is cured under UV/LED light, looks glossier and feels lighter, but is generally a bit more delicate.
Extensions don't damage nails when applied and removed correctly. Damage usually comes from peeling them off at home rather than getting them properly soaked off.
